Text of the letter:
Dear Billy,
I know this has been a tough time for you. I have received letters from children who have lost their homes and treasured belongings, had to change schools, and struggled with other losses.
I am so proud of you! You have showed the quality of “resilience.” But that doesn’t mean that it’s not OK to feel sad or cry sometimes. Anytime you need someone to talk to, reach out to your family or your teacher and counselors at school. So many people care about you.
I know exactly where you live, because I am Santa Claus! I will bring you presents, of course, but you know better than most kids do that material possessions are not as important as time with friends, family, and pets.
Please remember that home is where your heart is, and love makes a family.
Love,
Santa
